Rodents such as rice, mice and other small animals can present a serious health threat in any living or working environments. Carriers of harmful diseases, they can be especially dangerous in areas where children play or food is prepared.
In addition to the threat of disease, rodents can also cause large amounts of damage through gnawing wires, wood, plastic and even metal such as steel. This can pose big problems at industrial and commercial sites and live up to their reputation of breeding at an exceptionally high rate.

How to Spot a Rodent Infestation

Whether it is one or two mice or a suspected nest, it is important to know the signs of infestation, so you can protect your home or business. Common signs of a rodent problem include droppings, scratching noises, ammonia smell, unexplained damage and of course nests.
If you suspect you have a rodent problem, you should seek professional advice as soon as possible. Coquet Pest Control provides expert rodent control to help identify the extent of the problem before eliminating it. It is important to find the cause of infestation or point of entry early – this will help the infestation from spreading and prevent it from happening again.

Type of Rodent

There are 2 main species commonly found in mouse infestations. The field mouse, (apodemus sylvaticus) is typically larger and light brown in colour. The tail is around 2 inches long. The house mouse (mus domesticus) tends to be smaller and is a brown/grey colour.
Although small, mice can roam large areas to hunt for food and can move very quickly. They can fit through very small spaces like narrow cavities in walls and are able to run up vertical walls.
Mice can carry dangerous diseases including leptospirosis and salmonella which is why it is important to eradicate the problem quickly. They also breed at an alarming rate so if you spot one, you can be almost certain there will be more nearby.

The most common type of rat found in infestations is the black rat and the more common brown rat. Both the black rat (rattus rattus) and the brown rat (rattus norvegicus) seek food and shelter and will happily inhabit and breed in your home so it is important to act if one is spotted or any signs are noticed.
Rats are intelligent and can often sense when DIY efforts are being made to capture them, which is why seeking professional help is advised. As with mice, rats also carry harmful disease and can breed incredibly quickly.
